Healthy Greek Turkey Meatballs (with Tzatziki!)

For the Greek Meatballs:

  • 1 lb. ground turkey
  • ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup red onion, chopped
  • ¼ cup feta cheese, crumbled
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried dill
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

For the Tzatziki Sauce:

  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 Persian cucumbers, grated
  • 1 Tbsp fresh dill (or 1 tsp dried dill)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • Cracked black pepper, to taste

Instructions

Tzatziki Sauce:

  • Grate 2 Persian cucumbers, wrap in paper towels or cheesecloth, and squeeze out excess liquid.
  • In a large bowl, combine cucumbers, 1 cup Greek yogurt, 1 Tbsp fresh dill (or 1 tsp dried), 2 minced garlic cloves, 2 Tbsp lemon juice, 1 Tbsp olive oil, ½ tsp salt, and black pepper to taste. Stir well, cover, and refrigerate.

Meatballs:

  • Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or spray with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl, mix 1 lb. ground turkey, ¼ cup panko breadcrumbs, ¼ cup chopped red onion, ¼ cup crumbled feta, 3 minced garlic cloves, 1 egg, 2 tsp dried oregano, 1 tsp dried dill, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp black pepper until just combined.
  • Form into 1-inch balls (about 12-16) and place on the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 15-20 minutes until golden and cooked through (165°F/74°C internal temperature).
  • Optional: Brown meatballs in a sauté pan with olive oil for 2-3 minutes per side before baking, checking doneness at 13 minutes.

Serve: Serve hot with chilled tzatziki sauce and lemon wedges.

Notes

  • For crispier meatballs, brown in a sauté pan before baking.
  • Add red pepper flakes for a spicy kick.
  • Store meatballs and tzatziki separately in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze cooked meatballs for up to 3 months; thaw before reheating.
